Description

The Indian Navy has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of ‘Yard 3034 Ajay’, the eighth and final vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series. The ship was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and symbolizes India’s continued progress toward self-reliance in defence production, in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Launch Ceremony And Key Attendees

The vessel was officially launched on 21 July 2025 at the GRSE facility in Kolkata. The ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, the Chief of Materiel, while Mrs Priya Deshmukh carried out the ceremonial launch. High-ranking officials from both the Indian Navy and GRSE were present at the event. This launch closely follows the induction of the class’s first ship, INS Arnala, on 18 June 2025, and the upcoming delivery of the second vessel, INS Androth, which has successfully completed sea trials.

Design And Indigenous Development

‘Ajay’ showcases a high level of indigenous input, with more than 80% of its components sourced and developed within India. The vessel’s construction underlines the government's emphasis on domestic defence production under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns. GRSE, a leading state-run shipbuilding company, has been instrumental in India's naval development since 1961, when it delivered the original INS Ajay, the country’s first indigenously built warship.

Operational Role And Features

The ship is designed to bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities in detecting and neutralizing underwater threats in coastal and shallow waters. It comes equipped with advanced sonar systems, including a hull-mounted sonar and a Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS). Its arsenal includes modern torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, a 30 mm naval gun (NSG-30), and a 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Controlled Gun (SRCG), allowing it to effectively carry out anti-submarine warfare and mine-laying missions.

Propulsion And Navigation Systems

‘Ajay’ is driven by diesel engines coupled with waterjet propulsion, providing superior manoeuvrability and speed, especially in shallow waters. This propulsion system enhances its agility for close-coastal operations. Additionally, the ship integrates cutting-edge communication and electronic warfare systems, further strengthening its role in safeguarding maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region.

Enhancing Maritime Defence Capability

The induction of this final ASW SWC vessel marks a strategic enhancement in India’s coastal surveillance and submarine deterrence framework. It reflects the country’s increasing technological maturity in shipbuilding and commitment to achieving full-scale defence indigenisation. With the addition of ‘Ajay’, the Navy is better positioned to secure its territorial waters and counter underwater threats with greater efficiency.
