The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development under the Union Ministry of Rural Development, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend the reach of its women-focused initiative the Bima Sakhi Yojana in rural parts of the country.
About Bima Sakhi Yojana
The Bima Sakhi Yojana is a unique empowerment scheme launched by LIC that aims to enhance women’s participation in the insurance sector while promoting financial awareness in rural India. It is a performance-linked stipendiary programme created exclusively for women, particularly those residing in villages and small towns.
Key Features Of Scheme
Target Group: The scheme is open to women aged 18 to 70 years who have passed at least Class 10.
Training and Support: Selected women will receive specialized training in insurance products, sales, and financial literacy. This will equip them to work effectively as LIC agents in rural communities.
Stipend Structure: To support them during the initial phase, LIC will provide a monthly stipend:
Rupees 7,000 per month in the first year
Rupees 6,000 per month in the second year
Rupees 5,000 per month in the third year
Additional Earnings: Besides the stipend, Bima Sakhis will earn a commission on the policies they sell. For instance, they can earn up to Rupees 48,000 (excluding bonuses) in commissions during the first year.
Career Advancement: After successful completion of training and initial experience, graduate-level Bima Sakhis may be considered for promotion to Development Officer positions within LIC, offering them long-term career opportunities.
Scheme Outreach And Implementation
The initiative aims to create a wide network of trained women agents across India. LIC plans to enlist two lakh Bima Sakhis over the next three years. These women will act as crucial financial intermediaries in their local communities, enhancing insurance coverage and awareness in underserved rural populations.
Eligibility Criteria
To ensure the scheme targets the right beneficiaries, certain eligibility norms have been laid out:
Basic Eligibility
Women aged between 18 and 70 years
Must have passed Class 10
Preference will be given to rural women
Ineligibility Conditions
Women who are close relatives (spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws) of existing LIC employees or agents
Retired employees and former LIC agents
Current agents associated with LIC
Bima Sakhi Yojana Matters
The Bima Sakhi Yojana not only promotes insurance inclusion in rural areas but also serves as a women empowerment tool. It bridges the gender gap in the financial sector by offering economic opportunities and nurturing leadership roles for rural women. By empowering them to become financial educators and insurance facilitators in their own communities, the scheme contributes to both financial literacy and gender-inclusive development.
