Uttarakhand Launches India First Project To Restore Critically Endangered Plants

Description

Uttarakhand, a state known for its rich Himalayan biodiversity and over 69% forest cover, has rolled out a landmark initiative to reintroduce 14 critically endangered plant species into their native environments. Spearheaded by the Research Wing of the Uttarakhand Forest Department, this conservation effort began in July 2025 and aligns with the monsoon season, which is ideal for planting. The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Uttarakhand’s Flora Matters

The state spans a range of ecological zones from alpine meadows to the lowland Terai hosting a variety of rare and endangered plant species. These plants are not only ecologically significant but also valued for their medicinal and cultural uses. However, their populations are declining due to unsustainable harvesting, habitat destruction, climate change, and poor natural regeneration. Preserving these plants is crucial for maintaining ecological stability and supporting traditional healing practices.

Species Chosen For Revival

Fourteen species identified as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable by the IUCN Red List and the Uttarakhand State Biodiversity Board have been selected for this project. Key species include:

  • Himalayan Gentian

  • White Himalayan Lily

  • Indian Spikenard

  • Doon Cheese Wood

  • Kumaon Fan Palm

These plants are particularly sought after for their medicinal properties, which has made them vulnerable to overexploitation.

Propagation And Habitat Study

High-altitude nurseries across the state have been used to develop species-specific propagation methods involving seeds, bulbs, rhizomes, and cuttings. Parallel to this, scientists mapped the historical distribution of each species using both primary surveys and historical data. The reintroduction zones span diverse terrains and climate zones, including alpine and deciduous forest regions.

Steps Taken For Replanting

Before replantation, selected sites were prepared by addressing environmental threats such as livestock grazing, illegal logging, and human interference. Each plant’s GPS location was recorded to facilitate future tracking. Safety measures like fencing and forest patrols were implemented to ensure the plants are protected. The first replanting activities began with the arrival of the monsoon.

Medicinal And Ecological Relevance

Every species under the programme holds unique importance. For instance:

  • Himalayan Gentian is used to treat liver disorders and fevers.

  • White Himalayan Lily features in formulations like Chyavanprash.

  • Indian Spikenard is harvested for its aromatic oils used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Restoring these species strengthens ecosystem diversity and ensures a sustainable source of traditional medicinal ingredients.

Overcoming Restoration Challenges

The initiative faces several challenges, including limited seed viability, degraded natural habitats, and external threats like expanding infrastructure. However, dedicated teams from the Forest Department’s research units and field staff have played a key role in mitigating these obstacles. The programme places strong emphasis on ongoing monitoring and adaptive management strategies.

A Model For Nation

This is India’s first comprehensive and scientifically managed plant reintroduction project. It not only highlights the importance of preserving plant species alongside animals but also provides a blueprint for similar efforts across the country. The programme underscores the need to safeguard India’s botanical wealth and fragile ecosystems for future generations.
