The latest results of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 have once again recognised Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai as the nation’s cleanest cities. These urban centres topped the newly introduced Super Swachh League, a category created to celebrate cities that consistently excel in urban cleanliness and sanitation.
Top Performing Cities And Recognitions
Indore claimed the top position, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai.
Vijayawada secured the fourth spot in the national rankings.
In the New Generation Swachh Shehar category, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Lucknow were named leading performers.
A total of 78 entities including cities, cantonments, and institutions were honoured for exceptional work in sanitation.
Prayagraj received the title of Best Ganga Town, while Secunderabad Cantonment Board was praised for its robust sanitation practices.
Visakhapatnam, Jabalpur, and Gorakhpur were recognised for initiatives ensuring the safety and dignity of sanitation workers.
Inclusive Reforms In Survey Framework
The 2024-25 edition introduced a more accessible and equitable assessment model. Key updates included:
Implementation of the One City, One Award principle, ensuring fair competition among different city sizes.
Introduction of 10 new parameters and division into five population-based categories to reflect city-specific progress.
Declaration of 34 Promising Swachh Shehars, showing significant improvement in cleanliness efforts.
New Initiatives To Boost Urban Sanitation
To amplify the impact of the cleanliness drive:
Union Minister Manohar Lal launched the Swachh City Partnership, a peer-to-peer mentorship initiative. This connects top-performing cities with underachieving ones to exchange successful strategies.
The Accelerated Dumpsite Remediation Programme, set to begin on 15 August, aims to remove old waste dumps and promote scientific waste processing. The year-long campaign seeks to free up land and strengthen sanitation infrastructure.
Leadership, Civic Engagement & Circular Economy
President Droupadi Murmu acknowledged the role of citizens, startups, educational institutions, and local bodies in the success of Swachh Bharat Mission. She highlighted the value of the 3R philosophy Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in building a circular economy, creating green jobs, and involving the youth.
Recognition For Civic Bodies
New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) received the Super Swachh League City Award for towns with populations between 50,000 and 3 lakh. NDMC’s leadership described this as a benchmark for municipal excellence.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi stood at 31st among cities with a population of over 10 lakh.
Ghaziabad ranked 11th, while Mumbai and Chennai showed lower performance in the sanitation index.
