Description

In a significant boost to infrastructure and regional connectivity, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways recently inaugurated the Sigandur Cable-Stayed Bridge, also known as the Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli Bridge, over the backwaters of the Sharavati River in Sagar taluk, located in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district.

About Sigandur Bridge: Engineering Feat And Strategic Importance

The newly opened bridge stands as a major milestone in India's civil engineering landscape, being the second-longest cable-stayed bridge in the country. Key features include:

  • Length: 44 kilometers

  • Width: 16 meters

  • Construction Cost: Rupees 473 crore

The bridge connects Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli villages and offers a direct link between Sagara town and Sigandur, home to the revered Chowdeshwari Temple, a popular pilgrimage site in the region.

Prior to its construction, local residents faced significant travel challenges due to the absence of a proper crossing over the backwaters of the Sharavati River. Many communities relied on boats or had to take lengthy detours to reach administrative centres, especially after the construction of the Linganamakki Dam in the 1970s, which submerged several key transport routes.

The completion of the bridge restores a vital connectivity corridor, easing movement for residents, pilgrims, and tourists alike, while also promoting regional development and access to essential services.

Significance Of Project

  • Connectivity Boost: Shortens travel time and distance to Sigandur from various parts of the district.

  • Economic Impact: Facilitates smoother transport of agricultural produce and boosts tourism around the Sigandur temple and Jog Falls.

  • Social Integration: Reconnects communities long isolated by the dam-induced backwaters.

Sharavati River: A Lifeline Of Karnataka Western Ghats

The Sharavati River is one of Karnataka’s most important west-flowing rivers, playing a crucial ecological and hydrological role in the Western Ghats. It is also home to the famous Jog Falls, a major tourist attraction and one of the tallest waterfalls in India.

Key Characteristics:

  • Origin: Arises in the Western Ghats, near Ambutheertha in Thirthahalli taluk.

  • Flow Direction: Travels northwest before emptying into the Arabian Sea near Honavar in Uttara Kannada district.

  • Length: 128 kilometers

  • Drainage Basin Area: Approximately 2,985 square kilometers

Jog Falls:

  • Formed by the Sharavati River, these falls descend from a height of 253 meters and are divided into four segments: Raja, Rani, Rover, and Rocket.

Geological And Ecological Importance

The river basin is characterised by diverse terrains, including:

  • Rocky escarpments

  • Deep gorges

  • Fertile lowlands

  • Dense forest areas of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

It supports a rich biodiversity and is a crucial part of hydropower generation, particularly through the Linganamakki Reservoir and Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project.

Major Tributaries:

  • Nandihole

  • Haridravathi

  • Mavinahole

  • Hilkunji

  • Yennehole

  • Hurlihole

  • Nagodihole

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Sigandur Cable-Stayed Bridge marks a historic moment in improving Karnataka’s rural connectivity and public infrastructure. Beyond reducing travel time and easing logistical burdens, it reestablishes vital socio-economic linkages for communities affected by past development projects. Combined with the natural richness of the Sharavati basin, this region is poised to become a blend of ecological significance and improved human mobility.
