Description
The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is set to inaugurate the 75th Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) at the Government Medical College, Badaun in Uttar Pradesh. This milestone reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to make support services more accessible and inclusive for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens across the country.
About Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra
The PMDKs are part of a flagship initiative by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. These centres aim to serve as one-stop support hubs, offering a range of services such as:
Assessment and evaluation of disabilities
Counselling and rehabilitation guidance
Distribution of assistive devices and aids
Follow-up and post-distribution care
The centres are being developed and operated by ALIMCO (Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India), a central public sector enterprise functioning under DEPwD.
Services Offered At Badaun PMDK
The newly launched centre in Badaun will provide support under two major schemes:
Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) Scheme targeted at persons with disabilities
Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) aimed at senior citizens, especially those from economically weaker sections
The Badaun PMDK will offer free-of-cost assistive devices, including but not limited to:
Tricycles and wheelchairs for mobility
Hearing aids for the hearing impaired
Walking sticks, walkers, and crutches
Artificial limbs and orthotic devices
Customized support accessories for ease of daily living
These services ensure that individuals receive comprehensive, medically approved support in a dignified, streamlined, and timely manner.
Impact And Outreach
Since its inception, the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra initiative has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of more than 1.4 lakh beneficiaries across India. The value of assistive devices distributed so far has exceeded Rupees 179.15 crore, reflecting the scale and reach of the program.
By focusing on regional accessibility, PMDKs reduce travel time, cost, and dependency for beneficiaries many of whom would otherwise have to travel to distant cities for basic rehabilitation services.
