In a setback to India’s defence export aspirations, Brazil has reportedly suspended discussions to procure the Akash surface-to-air missile system. The decision deals a blow to India’s growing ambitions in the global arms export market.
Overview Of Akash Missile System
The Akash is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) in Hyderabad and is designed to defend critical installations and strategic zones from aerial threats.
Key Features And Capabilities
Propulsion & Speed: Powered by a solid-fuel ramjet motor, Akash can reach speeds between Mach 2.5 and 3.5, equivalent to up to 4,200 km/h.
Range & Altitude: The missile system can effectively neutralize targets at distances ranging from 4.5 km to 25 km, and at altitudes of up to 18 km.
Guidance System: The missile is guided via command-based systems and features a digital autopilot, along with a self-destruct mechanism to reduce risks in case of a missed target.
Warhead & Effectiveness: Each missile is equipped with a 60 kg warhead, capable of being either conventional or nuclear. The system boasts an 88% single-shot kill probability, which can rise to 99% when two missiles are launched in salvo.
Advanced Radar Integration
A pivotal component of the Akash system is its Rajendra phased array radar, a 3D passive electronically scanned array (PESA). This high-performance radar provides critical data on an enemy aircraft's range, direction, and altitude, while simultaneously tracking and guiding the missile during engagements.
Operational Flexibility
Multi-Target Capability: The Akash system is capable of engaging several threats simultaneously, operating in both group and autonomous modes.
Countermeasure Resistance: Built-in Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) improve its survivability in electronic warfare environments.
Mobility and Automation: The system is configured on mobile platforms, is fully automatic, and offers rapid reaction time from target detection to neutralization.
Future-Ready Design: Its open-system architecture ensures adaptability with current and next-generation air defence networks.
