In a remarkable wildlife discovery, a caracal a rarely seen wild cat has been photographed within the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. This is the first confirmed sighting of the species in the state in almost 20 years. The detection is part of the broader conservation activities being conducted under Project Cheetah, which has intensified wildlife monitoring efforts in the region since 2023.

Launched to support the reintroduction of cheetahs, Project Cheetah also focuses on restoring ecosystems and tracking biodiversity in the Gandhi Sagar landscape. As part of the initiative, camera traps were installed in the secure Cheetah Closed Natural Area to record animal activity. It was through these traps, specifically in the Golabavdi beat of the sanctuary’s western range, that images of the elusive caracal were captured—marking the first verified record of its presence during the ongoing monitoring operations.
About Caracal
The caracal (Caracal caracal) is a medium-sized feline species known for its striking black-tufted ears and impressive leaping ability, often catching birds in mid-air. Found across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and some parts of India, caracals thrive in dry scrublands, semi-arid areas, and moist deciduous forests. In India, their populations have declined significantly due to habitat destruction and human interference, and they are currently protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which classifies them as threatened.
Conservation Struggles And Renewed Hopes
India’s caracal population has faced critical threats from habitat fragmentation and low reproduction rates. A statewide survey conducted in Madhya Pradesh in 2019 failed to locate any individuals, partly due to confusion with similar species such as jungle cats. Efforts to reintroduce caracals, including a plan in 2023 targeting the Gwalior region, reflect the growing focus on conserving this rare species. The recent sighting in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary offers renewed optimism for conservationists striving to protect and revive caracal populations in India.
