Description

A newly identified butterfly species, Zographetus mathewi, has been discovered in the Western Ghats, a region recognized globally for its exceptional biodiversity. This species, belonging to the Hesperiidae family of skipper butterflies, is native to the lowland forests of Kerala and adds to the growing list of unique fauna from this ecological hotspot. Initially mistaken for a known species, Z. ogygia, it was confirmed as a distinct species through thorough morphological and anatomical analysis.

Discovery And Research Efforts

The species was discovered by a collaborative team of researchers from the Travancore Nature History Society, Institute of Tropical Research, Ecology and Conservation, and the Zoological Survey of India. After field observations, scientists noted slight but crucial differences in wing patterns and reproductive anatomy. This led to its formal classification and description in the scientific journal Entomon.

Taxonomic Significance And Naming

Zographetus mathewi is the 15th member of the Zographetus genus and the fifth to be reported from India. It is categorized within the Zographetus satwa group, which is characterized by its specific wing structures and male secondary sexual features. The species is named in honour of Dr. George Mathew, a renowned Indian entomologist and former head of the Entomology Division at the Kerala Forest Research Institute. Its common name, Sahyadri Spotted Flitter, reflects its Western Ghats origin, known locally as Sahyadri.

Distinctive Physical Features

The butterfly is notable for several unique characteristics that set it apart from its close relatives. These include:

  • A basal tuft of hair beneath the forewing

  • Yellow-ochre colouration on the underside of the hindwing

  • Distinctive genital structures in both males and females

  • Swollen veins in male forewings, a trait seen in its species group

Habitat And Range

Z. mathewi is found in forest areas below 600 metres in elevation, making it a low-elevation endemic species. Its caterpillars feed on Aganope thyrsiflora, a type of legume. While adult sightings have been scarce only one recorded in several years multiple larvae and pupae were documented in areas including Kallar, Shendurney, Edamalayar, and Nilambur, indicating a potentially wider but limited habitat range.

Importance Of Discovery

The identification of Zographetus mathewi underscores the rich, yet still underexplored, biodiversity of the Western Ghats. It highlights the critical role of detailed fieldwork and morphological studies in uncovering cryptic species. The discovery also reinforces the urgent need to preserve lowland forests, which serve as vital habitats for rare and endemic organisms.
