The Ministry of Defence has hailed the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) as a major milestone in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. This state-of-the-art artillery platform is set to replace older, smaller-calibre artillery guns, significantly boosting the Indian Army's firepower and precision strike capability.
About ATAGS
The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System is a next-generation, high-calibre, long-range artillery system designed and developed entirely in India. It has been conceptualized by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a key laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune.
ATAGS represents a strategic leap in India’s defence capabilities and is a part of the Indian Army’s artillery modernization program. It is tailored to meet modern battlefield requirements, providing both long-range engagement and tactical flexibility.
Key Features Of ATAGS
Calibre and Range - The ATAGS is a 155 mm, 52-calibre howitzer capable of firing projectiles to distances exceeding 40 km, placing it among the most advanced towed artillery systems globally.
Versatile Ammunition Compatibility - It can fire a wide variety of 155 mm ammunition, including high-explosive shells, precision-guided munitions (PGMs), smoke, and illumination rounds, offering both lethality and tactical versatility.
Firing Efficiency - The system can fire up to 5 rounds per minute and has a sustained firing rate of 60 rounds per hour, enhancing battlefield readiness during prolonged engagements.
Mobility and Deployment - It is mounted on a 6x6 high-mobility vehicle, enabling efficient towing and deployment across diverse terrains, from deserts to high-altitude areas.
Advanced Fire Control & Automation - The ATAGS integrates a fully digital fire control system with automatic gun alignment and positioning, enabling ‘shoot-and-scoot’ operations to avoid counter-battery fire.
Electrically Operated System - One of the first artillery systems to feature an all-electric drive rather than conventional hydraulics, reducing maintenance, improving reliability, and increasing operational lifespan.
Minimum Range & Flexibility - The gun also boasts the shortest minimum range at high firing angles, making it uniquely adaptable for close combat support in mountainous or restricted terrain.
All-Weather, All-Terrain Capability - The system is built to operate in extreme temperatures, ensuring performance in both desert and sub-zero Himalayan conditions.

Bharat Forge Ltd. – Part of the Kalyani Group, known for its metallurgical and weapons manufacturing expertise.
