Description

The 2025 PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) has provided a comprehensive picture of student learning across the country. Covering over 21 lakh students from Grades 3, 6, and 9 across 74,229 schools in 781 districts, the assessment focused on evaluating performance in languages, mathematics, science, social science, and environmental understanding.

About PARAKH RS Assessment

The survey aimed to evaluate student competencies in core subjects language and mathematics across all three grades, “The World Around Us” for Grades 3 and 6, and science and social science for Grade 9. In addition, over 2.7 lakh teachers and school heads participated by responding to questionnaires, providing contextual insights into teaching practices and school environments. The goal was to identify learning gaps and guide evidence-based policy decisions.

States And Districts That Excelled

States and union territories such as Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, and Chandigarh emerged as top performers.

  • Grade 3: Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala

  • Grade 6: Kerala, Punjab, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu

  • Grade 9: Punjab, Kerala, Chandigarh

Conversely, the lowest-performing districts were predominantly located in Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Grade 3 Student Performance Highlights

  • Language:

    • 67% could use appropriate vocabulary in daily situations and infer word meanings.

    • 60% were able to read and interpret short narratives.

    • 61% understood basic factual texts.

  • Mathematics:

    • 68% could group items by multiple characteristics.

    • 69% identified number and shape patterns.

    • Only 55% were able to sequence numbers correctly.

    • Just 54% understood basic multiplication and division.

Grade 6 Student Learning Trends

  • Only 54% grasped large numbers and the Indian number system.

  • Problem-solving proficiency was low, with only 38% solving real-life puzzles using numbers.

  • Fraction knowledge was particularly weak (29%).

  • Measurement and estimation skills were at 42%.

  • In environmental science, 44% identified key natural and social elements, while only 38% could predict environmental patterns.

  • More than half could describe the functions of local governance bodies.

Grade 9 Academic Understanding

  • Social Science: 45% understood constitutional values and India's freedom movement.

  • Language: Reading comprehension stood at 54%.

  • Mathematics:

    • Only 31% showed knowledge of different number sets.

    • 28% could apply percentages effectively.

  • Science:

    • 37% explained pressure and temperature concepts.

    • Around one-third understood basic electricity.

    • 47% discussed biodiversity.

    • Only 34% differentiated between living and non-living beings.

    • Awareness of puberty and adolescent health was limited to 37%.

Differences Across School Types

  • Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) scored the lowest in Grade 3 mathematics but were the top performers in Grade 9, especially in language.

  • State government and government-aided schools showed weaker math scores in Grade 6, highlighting specific areas for policy focus.
