Description

In July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a landmark visit to Namibia, marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in nearly three decades. The trip aimed to strengthen bilateral relations across sectors such as technology, healthcare, infrastructure, security, and development, while highlighting India’s renewed focus on strategic partnerships in Africa, especially with resource-rich nations like Namibia.

Historic Foundations Of India-Namibia Relations

India and Namibia share a deep-rooted history based on anti-colonial solidarity. India was among the first nations to champion Namibia’s independence from apartheid-era South Africa, even raising the issue at the United Nations in 1946. The South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), Namibia’s liberation party, opened its first foreign mission in New Delhi in 1986. During the independence struggle, India provided logistical, military, and diplomatic support to Namibian fighters. Following Namibia’s independence in 1990, formal diplomatic ties were established with embassies in both capitals.

Strengthening Development And Diplomatic Cooperation

Since Namibia's independence, both countries have deepened diplomatic engagement through high-level visits and development partnerships. India has supported capacity-building efforts in Namibia through programmes like the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme. Namibian professionals across defence, health, and diplomacy have received training in India. India also extended vital assistance during humanitarian crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic, droughts, and floods.

Economic Ties And Strategic Resource Access

Namibia’s rich natural reserves, particularly in uranium, lithium, zinc, and rare earth elements, are increasingly significant for India’s energy and industrial goals. In 2023, bilateral trade reached $654 million, with India exporting pharmaceuticals, cereals, and industrial equipment. Indian companies have invested around $800 million in Namibia, primarily in the mining and diamond processing sectors. The creation of an 'India Wing' at the University of Namibia has furthered educational collaboration.

Wildlife And Environmental Collaboration

One of the most notable aspects of Indo-Namibian cooperation is in the field of wildlife conservation. In 2022, both nations signed a landmark agreement to translocate cheetahs from Namibia to India, marking the first-ever intercontinental relocation of a major predator species. This project symbolizes India's commitment to biodiversity restoration and ecological partnerships with African nations.

India-Africa Relations: A Contrast To China's Influence

While China leads as Africa’s largest trading partner, recording over $200 billion in trade, India ranks fourth with $100 billion in 2023. Since 1996, India has invested $76 billion across Africa and plans to double this by 2030. India’s approach emphasises sustainable development, mutual respect, and non-exploitative partnerships, contrasting with concerns over China’s debt-driven projects. India positions itself as a reliable partner promoting long-term development and capacity-building.

Security And Strategic Engagement

India has ramped up its strategic outreach in Africa through platforms like the India-Africa Defence Dialogue and military exercises such as AFINDEX. Namibia’s participation underlines the deepening security cooperation between the two countries. Through the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative, India seeks to enhance maritime security and economic cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region, with Namibia playing a key strategic role. Additionally, Namibia’s endorsement of India’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council reflects strong political alignment on the global stage.
