India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 kicked off with an impactful opening session on July 10 in New Delhi, where Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to sustainable transportation and electric mobility. The session, held at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, focused on India’s roadmap for electrifying its transport sector and highlighted key policy frameworks that are accelerating this transformation.
India’s Transition To Clean And Green Transport
In his inaugural address, Minister Harsh Malhotra emphasized the government’s unwavering focus on developing a greener, more environmentally responsible transportation system. He pointed out that government-backed initiatives such as the PM e-Drive Scheme and FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) are creating a robust ecosystem for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in India. These schemes are aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing public mobility infrastructure, and making EVs more accessible to the public.
Rapid Economic Growth And EV-Friendly Reforms
Calling India the fastest-growing major economy in the world, Malhotra highlighted that the country is making significant progress toward its green mobility goals. He spoke about several enabling policies introduced by the government, including incentives for EV retrofitting, tax exemptions on tolls for EVs, and support for electric two-wheelers and buses. These steps are designed to reduce costs for consumers while encouraging private and public sectors to adopt sustainable alternatives.
Integrating Logistics And Green Infrastructure
The minister also shed light on the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. These state-of-the-art facilities will integrate road, rail, and warehousing systems and will now feature EV charging stations and renewable energy solutions. By reducing transportation costs and emissions, these parks are set to revolutionize India’s logistics sector and bolster its reputation as a leader in clean transport.
Driving Innovation: Battery Recycling And Net Zero Goals
Looking ahead, Malhotra urged the electric vehicle and energy storage industry to invest in indigenous manufacturing, battery technology tailored to Indian climatic and road conditions, and recycling solutions for used batteries. He reiterated India’s ambitious Net Zero carbon emissions goal by 2070, as pledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26. Furthermore, India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, positioning itself as a global leader in clean energy transition.
