The Government of Andhra Pradesh has rolled out an innovative initiative named Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS) to tackle mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria, which typically surge during the monsoon season. By incorporating artificial intelligence and advanced surveillance tools, the program aims to control the mosquito population more effectively. Initially, it will be implemented in six key urban centres across the state.
Harnessing AI To Target Mosquito Hotspots
SMoSS utilizes AI-enabled sensors, drones, and IoT devices to monitor mosquito breeding and movement patterns. These smart technologies collect data on mosquito density, species types, temperature, and humidity levels. This real-time information enables authorities to carry out targeted spraying of insecticides, minimizing unnecessary chemical use.
Pilot Launch Across Six Cities
The program’s pilot phase will cover 66 specific zones in the following six cities:
Visakhapatnam – 16 locations
Vijayawada – 28 locations
Kakinada – 4 locations
Rajamahendravaram – 5 locations
Nellore – 7 locations
Kurnool – 6 locations
These cities have recorded high incidences of mosquito-borne diseases, including over 5,500 dengue cases in 2024 alone. With SMoSS, rapid and localized responses such as fogging and spraying will replace broad, less effective methods.
Integrated Action Through Technology And Community
Drones will be deployed for precision spraying of larvicides, reducing chemical use and covering hard-to-reach areas. A central digital dashboard will oversee ground-level operations, while mobile applications like Vector Control and Puramitra will enable both field workers and citizens to report mosquito breeding grounds.
Hospitals will provide daily case data, allowing health teams to identify outbreak zones and prepare timely containment strategies. The system will be operated by specialized agencies, whose performance will be evaluated and incentivized accordingly.
Towards Smarter Public Health Management
Spearheaded by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, SMoSS reflects a forward-thinking approach that blends smart city solutions with public health strategies. If successful, Andhra Pradesh could serve as a national model for intelligent mosquito control and disease prevention.
