Description
The Japanese Coast Guard vessel JCGS Itsukushima docked at Chennai Port on July 7, 2025, for a six-day goodwill visit. This stopover is part of Japan’s Global Ocean Voyage Training and aims to enhance maritime collaboration between India and Japan, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
Traditional Welcome And Strategic Significance
Led by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, Itsukushima was welcomed with traditional Indian hospitality upon arrival. The visit signifies the deepening maritime partnership between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), aligning with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. These frameworks emphasize regional maritime stability, safety, and freedom of navigation.
Scheduled Activities In Chennai
During the port call, the Japanese delegation will participate in a range of engagements, including:
Courtesy visits to senior Indian Coast Guard officials
Mutual ship tours
Joint training drills
Interactive sessions with ICG personnel
Vice Admiral Hiroaki Kaosue from the Japan Coast Guard will lead meetings with top Indian officials, including Director General Paramesh Sivamani and Additional Director General Donny Michael, who oversees the Eastern Seaboard operations.
Joint Exercise And Officer Exchange Programme
Upon completion of the Chennai visit, JCGS Itsukushima will participate in a joint maritime drill titled ‘Jaa Mata’, which translates to “See you later” in Japanese. The exercise aims to improve operational coordination between the two maritime forces.
Additionally, as part of a Sea Riders exchange programme, four Indian Coast Guard officers will embark on Itsukushima during its voyage to Singapore. This initiative fosters greater mutual understanding and professional collaboration between the two nations' coast guard services.
