India's top nuclear regulatory body, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), has recently authorized the operation of two indigenously developed 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat. About Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB)
The AERB serves as the apex authority overseeing nuclear and radiation safety across the country. It was established on November 15, 1983, under the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, by the President of India. Its powers and responsibilities are further reinforced through rules and notifications issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Mission and Mandate
AERB’s primary goal is to ensure that the use of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation in India poses no significant risk to human health or the environment. The Board is also entrusted with overseeing industrial safety in the facilities operated by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), under the Factories Act, 1948.
Organizational Structure
Headquarters: Mumbai
Composition: The Board has six members, including the Chairman and another full-time member (the Executive Director, who also serves as an ex-officio Board member).
The remaining four members are distinguished professionals from disciplines relevant to nuclear safety and regulation.
The Chairman holds executive authority and reports to the Atomic Energy Commission.
Regional And Research Operations
AERB operates Regional Regulatory Centres (RRCs) in Kolkata, Chennai, and New Delhi, which are tasked with continuous inspection and monitoring of radiation facilities in their respective zones.
It also runs a Safety Research Institute (SRI) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to conducting studies and research on nuclear and radiation safety.
