Evolution Of Hindi During British Rule
Under Mughal governance, Persian was the language of administration. This changed in 1832, when the British introduced a new policy that legal proceedings should be conducted in languages understood by the general population. As a result, Persian was phased out and replaced by English, Urdu, and regional languages. Hindi initially lagged behind, lacking both standardized vocabulary and institutional development. A major turning point came in the 1890s, when Devanagari script replaced the Persian script, largely influenced by British administrator Antony MacDonnell.
The Founding And Mission Of Nagari Pracharini Sabha
On January 16, 1893, the Nagari Pracharini Sabha was established in Banaras by scholars Shyam Sunder Das, Pandit Ramnarayan Mishra, and Thakur Shivkumar Singh. Their goal was to promote Hindi as a language of administration and education. The Sabha embarked on a massive project to compile a comprehensive Hindi dictionary, sourcing words from villages across India. After 21 years of dedicated work, the 11-volume ‘Shabd Sagar’ dictionary was finally published in 1929. The Sabha also played a crucial role in developing Hindi literature by publishing Acharya Ramchandra Shukla’s influential work, ‘History of Hindi Literature’.
Efforts To Promote Hindi Culture And Literature
In 1896, the Sabha established the Arya Bhasha Pustakalaya, which became the largest Hindi library in the country at the time. Though apolitical in nature, the Sabha received support from several freedom movement leaders, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak. It began publishing the Nagari Pracharini Patrika in 1896 and later launched the Saraswati magazine in 1900—both of which significantly contributed to the spread of Hindi literature and academic discourse.
Post-Independence Growth And Decline
Following India's independence, the Sabha gained support from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, expanding its reach to cities like Haridwar and New Delhi. It established multiple local chapters across the country. However, by the 1970s, internal conflicts and political interference disrupted its functioning. A prolonged leadership dispute ended with a 2024 Allahabad High Court ruling in favour of the Vyomesh Shukla faction, which has since worked to revive the Sabha’s mission. Under this leadership, significant works like Ramchandra Shukla’s literary history and poetry by Amir Khusrau have been republished.

The resurgence of the Nagari Pracharini Sabha reflects a growing interest in preserving and promoting Hindi's literary and cultural identity. As debates over the role of Hindi versus regional languages intensify, the Sabha’s legacy continues to shape discussions on language policy and national identity in India.
