The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), a groundbreaking initiative that uses artificial intelligence to track and control mosquito populations. Launched during the monsoon season, this project is the first in India to integrate AI technology into vector control strategies. The pilot will run across 66 sites within six major municipal corporations, including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Kurnool.

How SMoSS Works

SMoSS uses a combination of AI-enabled mosquito traps, drones, and IoT devices to monitor mosquito activity. These smart sensors identify mosquito species, gender, and population levels, while also tracking weather conditions like humidity and temperature that impact mosquito breeding cycles. When mosquito counts surpass safe thresholds, the system automatically alerts municipal teams to carry out fogging or spraying ensuring precise, need-based intervention rather than random chemical use.

Drone Deployment For Enhanced Coverage

To improve efficiency, drones are deployed to spray larvicides over wide areas. This reduces chemical usage, cuts costs, and minimises environmental harm. Drones also provide access to difficult terrain and enable faster treatment of breeding grounds, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of mosquito control operations.

Real-Time Monitoring And Data Transparency

SMoSS includes a live dashboard that transmits real-time data to a centralised server, allowing for constant surveillance and quicker response times. Implementation is handled by external agencies that are paid based on performance, encouraging accountability. Public complaints and field reports are managed through mobile apps like Vector Control and Puramitra, ensuring citizen participation and service transparency.

Health Data Integration And Hotspot Tracking

Hospitals across Andhra Pradesh will now report daily statistics on diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. This health data is analysed to pinpoint mosquito hotspots, enabling targeted fogging and larval treatment. The strategy focuses on prevention by curbing mosquito populations before outbreaks occur.
