Description
Sohra, formerly known as Cherrapunji and globally renowned as one of the wettest places on Earth, is experiencing an alarming drop in rainfall in 2025. Rainfall recorded this June was nearly one-third of last year’s total, highlighting the deepening impact of climate change on India’s northeastern hill regions.
Significant Drop In Seasonal Rainfall
This year, Sohra registered only 1,095.4 mm of rainfall in June, compared to 3,041.2 mm in the same month of 2024. A similar trend was seen in May, which fell short by roughly 400 mm. Experts describe this as one of the most dramatic declines in year-on-year precipitation, adding to a long-term trend of decreasing annual rainfall. Over the last 15 years, Sohra’s yearly rainfall has declined to between 8,000 and 9,000 mm, down from its historical average of 11,000 mm.
Once-Record Rainfall Levels Now A Distant Past
Historically, Sohra was famed for extraordinary rainfall, peaking in the 1970s when annual totals were nearly double the current averages. The town holds a world record of 24,555 mm in 1974, a feat that has yet to be matched. However, today’s precipitation figures amount to nearly a third of that record, signifying significant climate-induced transformation.
Factors Driving Rainfall Decline
Meteorologists and environmental experts attribute the reduced rainfall to a mix of factors:
Changing monsoon dynamics that are disrupting traditional rainfall patterns.
Widespread deforestation, which diminishes atmospheric moisture and reduces rainfall generation.
Warming sea surface temperatures, particularly in the Bay of Bengal, that affect monsoon strength and distribution.
Increased urbanisation and tourism, which put added stress on natural water systems and reduce forest cover.
Water Scarcity Despite Rain-Rich Reputation
Ironically, despite its legacy as a rain-soaked region, Sohra now grapples with water shortages, especially during drier months. Many villages depend on seasonal springs, while some communities require water tankers for basic needs. The town's population has expanded significantly from around 7,000 in 1961 to over 70,000 today further straining available water sources.
Environmental Alarm And Call For Conservation
Environmentalists are raising the alarm over the region’s ecological fragility. There are growing calls for:
Massive reforestation efforts,
Improved watershed management,
Regulation of construction and tourism activities.
These actions are deemed essential to restore Sohra’s ecosystem and ensure water security for future generations.
Monitoring And Government Response
Authorities are closely observing monsoon behaviour and acknowledging the worrying decline. However, reversing these long-term trends remains a daunting task. The ongoing changes raise serious questions about Sohra’s environmental resilience and whether the town can continue to sustain its population and global reputation amid changing climate realities.
