On July 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the prestigious ‘Key to the City of Buenos Aires’ during his official two-day trip to Argentina. The gesture acknowledges his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties between India and Argentina. Notably, this visit marked the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years.
A Symbol Of Trust And Diplomacy
The ceremonial honour was presented by Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government of Buenos Aires. Often regarded as a symbol of welcome and friendship, the ‘Key to the City’ signifies the strengthening relationship between the two nations. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this honour recognises PM Modi’s significant role in deepening cooperation with Argentina. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude through a series of posts and images on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Honouring Global Icons And Cultural Ties
As part of his visit, PM Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore by visiting their statues in Buenos Aires. He highlighted Gandhi’s enduring message of peace and non-violence as a guiding principle for humanity. He also laid a wreath at the memorial of General José de San Martín, a key figure in Argentina’s fight for independence. These tributes underscored the deep cultural respect and shared historical values between the two countries.
Advancing Bilateral Cooperation
During his visit, PM Modi met with Argentine President Javier Milei to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in sectors such as defence, energy, agriculture, mining, and trade. Argentina agreed to support India’s growing energy demands by providing lithium and shale gas. PM Modi also requested streamlined access for Indian pharmaceutical products into the Argentine market. The discussions extended to educational exchange and sports collaboration, with Modi inviting President Milei to visit India in the near future.
Heartfelt Reception By Indian Diaspora
The Indian community in Buenos Aires gave PM Modi a warm and festive welcome. Supporters gathered outside his hotel, waving Indian flags, singing patriotic songs, and dancing to traditional tunes. Interacting with them, PM Modi expressed his appreciation for their enthusiasm and remarked that geographical distance can never weaken cultural and emotional ties.
