Description
The Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI), located in Aduthurai, has recently introduced two innovative short-duration paddy varieties ADT 59 and ADT 53 that are proving to be game-changers for rice cultivation in the Cauvery delta. These improved strains are tailored to deliver better yields, withstand saline conditions, and offer enhanced nutritional and pest-resistant traits, making them well-suited for modern agricultural challenges.
ADT 59: High Yield With Cost-Effective Farming
ADT 59 is a bold-grain paddy variety that matures in just 110 to 115 days. It offers a 15–20% higher yield compared to older varieties like ADT 37 and ASD 16. Under Kuruvai season conditions, it has produced yields up to 4,000 kg per acre, significantly more than the usual 2,500 kg per acre. Importantly, it requires only half the usual fertiliser, making it a cost-efficient choice for farmers.
Its sturdy build ensures resistance to lodging, and it performs well in the unique soil and climatic conditions of the delta. Since procurement centres favour bold grains, farmers benefit from better market prices.
Salt Tolerance And Disease Resistance
ADT 59 is well adapted to saline-prone regions, a common issue in the delta. It shows strong natural resistance to major pests and diseases, including stem borers, blast, and brown leaf spot. This minimizes the need for chemical inputs and enhances environmental sustainability. Moreover, its compatibility with direct sowing methods simplifies farm operations.
Nutrition And Kitchen Utility
The variety contains 19.4 mg of zinc per 100 grams, contributing to better dietary nutrition. Its short and bold grains are ideal for making idli and dosa, staple dishes in South Indian cuisine. When mixed in a 6:1 ratio with black gram, the resulting batter is soft, fluffy, and economical, needing less grain to produce more.
ADT 53: A Versatile, Nutrient-Enriched Rice
Launched in 2025, ADT 53 has a slightly shorter maturity span of 105 to 110 days. It is a hybrid of ADT 43 and JGL 384, combining the best qualities of both parent varieties. It performs consistently across Kuruvai, Kodai (summer), and Navarai seasons, offering farmers greater flexibility.
With a 62% milling efficiency and 65% rice recovery, it delivers high post-harvest value. Rich in both zinc and iron, ADT 53 also addresses micronutrient deficiencies, particularly in rural diets.
Transforming Delta Paddy Cultivation
The release of ADT 59 and ADT 53 marks a significant advancement in rice farming for the Cauvery delta. These varieties not only offer higher returns and better grain quality but also reduce cultivation costs and improve climate resilience. By promoting short-duration, nutrient-rich, and high-yield crops, these varieties support the region’s sustainability and food security goals.
