India has reached a significant milestone in animal health with the global endorsement of its first Equine Disease-Free Compartment (EDFC). On July 3, 2025, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) officially recognised the facility at the Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre & College in Meerut Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh. This international approval allows Indian sport horses to participate in overseas competitions under verified health standards, representing a major leap forward in India’s animal health and trade capabilities.
About Equine Disease-Free Compartment
An EDFC is a rigorously monitored and regulated zone where horses are maintained under disease-free conditions. It follows WOAH’s Terrestrial Animal Health Code, which provides a framework for compartmentalisation. Within this area, stringent biosecurity measures, regular veterinary checks, and comprehensive disease surveillance ensure that horses remain free from high-risk equine diseases.
Location And International Accreditation
The country’s first EDFC has been developed at the RVC Centre & College in Meerut, which now holds WOAH certification. This global acknowledgment confirms the compartment’s compliance with international standards, facilitating India's entry into the global equine trade and sporting circuit.
Diseases Targeted And Safety Protocols
The compartment is certified free of major equine diseases such as:
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
Equine Influenza
Equine Piroplasmosis
Glanders
Surra
India has also maintained freedom from African Horse Sickness since 2014. To uphold this status, the facility implements robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) involving sanitation, vector control, waste management, and round-the-clock veterinary oversight. These preventive measures help identify and contain potential infections quickly.
Benefits For International Trade And Sports
The recognition enhances India’s ability to export sport horses and enables their participation in international equestrian competitions. It supports the growth of high-value equine breeding, strengthens India's position in global horse markets, and promotes domestic equestrian sports.
Institutional Collaboration
The success of the EDFC initiative was made possible through coordination between multiple agencies:
Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying
Ministry of Defence’s Directorate of Remount Veterinary Services
Equestrian Federation of India
Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department
Together, these institutions ensured the compartment met WOAH's requirements through consistent monitoring and regulatory compliance.
Expanding Compartmentalisation Model
India is extending the compartmentalisation approach to other livestock sectors, especially poultry. Work is underway to create Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)-free compartments, aimed at boosting poultry exports and reinforcing the country’s biosecurity infrastructure.
