Yard 12652, named INS Udaygiri, was officially handed over to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL) in Mumbai. This vessel is part of India's ongoing efforts to enhance its maritime capabilities through indigenous defence production.
About INS Udaygiri
INS Udaygiri is the second vessel in the line of seven stealth frigates being built under the Project 17A (P-17A) program. These ships are being constructed at both Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
The ship draws its name and legacy from the original INS Udaygiri, a steam-powered warship that served the nation with distinction for 31 years before its decommissioning on 24 August 2007. This modern version marks a technological evolution in terms of design, capability, and combat readiness.
Capabilities And Features
The Project 17A frigates are designed as multi-role platforms, suited for operations across the ‘Blue Water’ maritime zone. They are equipped to handle a wide spectrum of threats both conventional and asymmetric in strategic maritime regions vital to India’s national interests.
Project 17A: Technological Advancements
The hull design of P-17A ships is 4.54% larger compared to the earlier Shivalik-class (Project 17) ships.
These frigates feature superior stealth characteristics, enhanced agility, and reduced radar signature.
The ships are integrated with a modern Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, consisting of diesel engines and gas turbines. This powers Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) on both shafts.
An advanced Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) monitors and controls onboard machinery and systems.
Weapons And Sensors Suite
INS Udaygiri is armed with a sophisticated range of indigenous weaponry and sensor systems, including:
Supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles
Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles
A 76mm main gun
Rapid-fire Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) in both 30 mm and 12.7 mm calibres
These features make it a formidable platform capable of defending against aerial, surface, and subsurface threats.
Strategic And Economic Importance
The Project 17A initiative not only strengthens India’s naval capabilities but also contributes significantly to the national goal of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The project has led to:
Growth in the domestic shipbuilding ecosystem
Employment opportunities across sectors
Expansion of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
A boost to the indigenous defence industry
