Description

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed field trials of two cutting-edge communication systems, marking a major advancement in India’s self-reliant defence technology. These trials were carried out by the Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), based in Dehradun, in the strategically located region of Joshimath, Uttarakhand.

Key Communication Systems Tested

The trials focused on two crucial systems:

  • Software Defined Radio (SDR) – Manpack

  • Compact Transhorizon Communication System (CTCS)

Both systems are developed to enhance secure and high-speed communication in difficult terrains and operationally sensitive areas. The SDR Manpack supports encrypted voice and data transmission across multiple frequency bands, while the CTCS enables reliable high-data-rate connectivity in remote locations where civilian communication infrastructure is unavailable.

Trial Objectives And Real-World Testing

The primary goal of the trials was to evaluate the functionality and reliability of the SDR and CTCS under real-life field conditions. The tests assessed how well these systems perform across varying terrains, ensuring they meet the stringent operational requirements set by India’s security forces.

Joint Evaluation With Paramilitary Forces

The trials were conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and several Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Border Security Force (BSF), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were directly involved in assessing the equipment. Their feedback played a critical role in validating the user-centric performance of both communication systems.

System Capabilities And Features

  • SDR Manpack - Designed to support both analog and digital communication, the SDR enables seamless transition from older systems while providing multi-channel, multi-band support for mission-critical communication. It’s adaptable for tactical ground use and naval operations.

  • CTCS - Built for long-distance terrestrial communication, the CTCS provides secure connectivity over large geographic spans, especially in areas with no existing telecom infrastructure. It is ideal for backhaul communication in border or high-altitude areas.

Strengthening India’s Strategic Communication

The successful demonstration of these systems reinforces DRDO’s mission to develop homegrown technologies that are vital for defence preparedness. Secure and uninterrupted communication plays a key role in ensuring the efficiency and coordination of security operations, especially in inaccessible or high-threat regions.

Looking Ahead: Strategic And Operational Impact

The operational deployment of SDR and CTCS is expected to significantly improve communication resilience among India’s defence and paramilitary forces. It also reduces dependency on imported technologies, supporting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision. As these systems become integral to security networks, they will bolster real-time decision-making, surveillance, and response capabilities in critical missions.
