On July 1, 2025, the Indian Navy officially received INS Udaygiri, marking the induction of the second stealth frigate under the ambitious Project 17A. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, INS Udaygiri represents a leap forward in India’s maritime defence strategy. As part of a seven-ship series, this modern warship is tailored for complex naval missions, capable of countering both conventional and asymmetric threats in open-ocean, or ‘Blue Water’, operations.
About Project 17A
Project 17A is an advanced initiative following the earlier Shivalik-class (Project 17) frigates. A total of seven multi-role frigates are being constructed under this project, incorporating enhanced stealth technologies, upgraded sensors, and state-of-the-art weapons. These ships mark a significant upgrade over their predecessors, offering greater agility, survivability, and combat potential.
Design And Build Features
INS Udaygiri reflects the Indian Navy’s growing expertise in indigenous ship design, led by the Warship Design Bureau. The vessel has been constructed using the Integrated Construction method, which facilitates parallel outfitting and reduces overall build duration. Impressively, Udaygiri was completed and delivered within just 37 months of its launch a record timeline for ships of its class.
Key Technical Details
Larger Hull: Udaygiri’s hull is 4.54% bigger than the original P17 class.
Propulsion: Features a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, using both a diesel engine and gas turbine.
Advanced Systems: Equipped with a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) and Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
Weapons Suite: Includes:
A supersonic surface-to-surface missile system
Medium-range surface-to-air missiles
Close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for rapid response and point defence
Boost To Indigenous Industry And Employment
INS Udaygiri is a significant achievement in India's drive for self-reliance in defence production. The project has directly employed over 4,000 skilled workers, while indirectly supporting 10,000+ jobs through suppliers and ancillary industries. Importantly, over 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were involved in the production process, strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Lies Ahead
Construction of the remaining five Project 17A frigates is underway at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). These vessels are slated for phased delivery, with the final handover expected by the end of 2026. Once commissioned, these frigates will significantly expand the Indian Navy’s operational scope and reinforce India’s maritime security.
