The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the opening of applications for the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS) for the academic year 2025–26. Interested and eligible candidates can submit their applications online through the National Scholarship Portal scholarships.gov.in.
This scholarship programme aims to support bright students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuing higher education, thereby reducing dropout rates at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
About CSSS Scheme
Launched under the umbrella of the “Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP)”, this flagship scheme is implemented by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The scheme is designed to promote academic excellence and ensure that no meritorious student discontinues studies due to financial constraints.
Main Objective
The primary goal of the CSSS is to provide financial support to high-performing students from low-income families, enabling them to cover a part of their educational expenses while pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in recognised institutions across India.
Allocation And Distribution Of Scholarships
A total of 82,000 new scholarships are awarded each year:
41,000 for male students
41,000 for female students
The scholarships are awarded to students based on their performance in the Class 12 (Higher Secondary) board exams.
The total quota is distributed among State and Central Boards, including CBSE and ICSE, in proportion to the student population aged 18–25 years.
Within each state or board, scholarships are further distributed among three academic streams in the ratio:
Science – 3 parts
Commerce – 2 parts
Humanities – 1 part
In case of an insufficient number of applications in any category, slots may be reallocated across streams or gender.
Scholarship Amount And Benefits
The financial assistance offered under the CSSS scheme is structured as follows:
Undergraduate Courses: Rupees 12,000 per annum for the first three years of a regular degree programme.
Postgraduate Courses: Rupees 20,000 per annum.
Integrated Five-Year Courses: Rupees 12,000 per annum for the first three years and Rupees 20,000 per annum for the fourth and fifth years.
