Description
The Union Minister for Education recently took part in a special event at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Fort William, Kolkata, where FIFA footballs were distributed under the Football for Schools (F4S) initiative. This marks a significant step in integrating sports into school education to promote holistic development.
About Football For Schools (F4S) Programme
The Football for Schools (F4S) programme is a global initiative spearheaded by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in partnership with UNESCO. The programme aims to positively impact the lives of approximately 700 million children worldwide by embedding football-based learning into school education.
It strives to make football more inclusive and accessible for both boys and girls, empowering students through structured sports activities linked with educational and developmental goals. The initiative also supports the broader agenda of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key Objectives Of F4S Programme
The Football for Schools initiative is built around the following goals:
Equip students with essential life skills and values through football-based learning.
Train educators and coaches to deliver football sessions that also focus on building character and competencies.
Develop institutional capacity among schools, football associations, and government bodies to implement life-skill education through sports.
Encourage collaboration between schools, sports bodies, and government institutions to promote multisectoral cooperation.
Alignment With Global Policies
The F4S programme is closely aligned with several international education and health frameworks, including:
UNESCO’s Kazan Action Plan
Education 2030: Incheon Declaration and Framework for Action
WHO’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity (GAPPA)
These frameworks emphasize the importance of integrating physical education and sports into school systems to foster well-rounded development.
Global Alnd Indian Implementation
Originally launched in mid-2019 with pilot programmes in Puerto Rico and Lebanon, the F4S initiative has since expanded across several countries. In India, the programme is implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, with support from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
This initiative represents a collaborative effort to blend education and sport, providing young learners with the tools to grow both academically and socially through the universal language of football.
