Description

India continues to make steady progress in its journey toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as highlighted in the National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report 2025. Released on the occasion of Statistics Day, the report provides comprehensive time-series data on critical SDG-related metrics and reflects significant improvements in key areas like health, education, agriculture, and social security since 2015–16. However, it also identifies persistent gaps, particularly in clean energy adoption and reducing inequality.

Improvements In Health And Social Welfare

The report underscores a major leap in social protection outreach. Between 2016 and 2025, the proportion of the population covered by at least one social security scheme increased sharply from 22% to 64.3%. This progress can be attributed to targeted government schemes aimed at inclusive welfare delivery.

In healthcare, maternal and child health indicators show measurable progress. Institutional support for the elderly has also grown significantly, with the number of senior citizens receiving assistance jumping from 23,000 in 2015 to 1.57 lakh in 2023–24, reflecting stronger institutional frameworks for vulnerable populations.

Educational Advancements And Literacy Expansion

India’s education sector has also seen encouraging developments. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for higher education rose from 23.7% in 2015–16 to 29.5% in 2022–23, indicating broader access to tertiary education. This positive shift aligns with ongoing educational reforms and increased investments in learning infrastructure under initiatives like NEP 2020.

Agriculture And Economic Growth

Rural development has been bolstered by improvements in agricultural productivity. The Gross Value Added (GVA) per agricultural worker increased from Rupees 61,247 in 2015–16 to Rupees 94,110 in 2024–25. This growth signifies enhanced farm efficiency and rising rural incomes, contributing to food security and economic sustainability.

Environmental Gains And Renewable Energy Expansion

On the environmental front, India has made incremental progress. The share of renewable energy in the total installed electricity capacity rose from 16.02% in 2015–16 to 22.13% in 2024–25. Although encouraging, this increase highlights the need for accelerated efforts in clean energy adoption to meet climate commitments.

The country also witnessed a modest gain in forest coverage, which grew from 21.34% to 21.76% of the total geographical area. This trend points to strengthened afforestation initiatives and better environmental conservation policies.

Digital Tools For Data Accessibility

To enhance transparency and enable real-time access to socio-economic data, the government launched the GoIStats mobile application. This platform empowers stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, and citizens with reliable data at their fingertips, promoting informed decision-making and better governance.

Celebrating Statistical Excellence

The report was released on Statistics Day, commemorating the legacy of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the architect of India’s modern statistical system. The government reaffirmed its commitment to advancing statistical reforms by leveraging emerging technologies, which are now pivotal in strengthening India’s data infrastructure and supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat a developed and inclusive India.
