The Sugamya Bharat App (SBA), introduced by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Government of India, plays a key role in advancing accessibility for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Initially launched in 2021, the app underwent a significant upgrade to improve user experience and functional efficiency. By June 2025, it had crossed 83,791 downloads and garnered over 14,358 active users, with most installations coming from Android platforms.

The updated version of the app introduces several user-centric upgrades. A redesigned, user-friendly interface ensures smoother navigation, while a newly integrated AI-enabled chatbot assists users in real time. This feature helps users quickly find answers to their queries and access support when needed. Moreover, the app now provides alerts on new government initiatives focused on accessibility, along with a centralized repository of schemes and services tailored for persons with disabilities.
Promoting User Involvement Through Feedback
One of the app’s standout features is its ability to allow users to report accessibility barriers. Citizens can upload geo-tagged photographs of inaccessible public spaces or infrastructure, helping authorities pinpoint and address these challenges effectively. Since its rollout, the platform has received 2,705 user-generated complaints, out of which 1,897 have been resolved, demonstrating the government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible environment.
