The National Statistics Office (NSO) has released its comprehensive report detailing the value of output in agriculture and allied sectors from 2011–12 to 2023–24. The publication provides insights into changes in Gross Value Added (GVA) and Gross Value of Output (GVO), capturing sector-wise performance and state-level contributions over the twelve-year period.
Strong Expansion In Gross Value Added
The GVA for agriculture and its allied sectors has witnessed a substantial increase of 225%, rising from Rupees 1,502 thousand crore in 2011–12 to Rupees 4,878 thousand crore in 2023–24. This sharp rise reflects improved agricultural productivity and a growing contribution to India’s overall economy.
Gross Value Of Output: Sector-Wise Trends
At constant prices, the Gross Value of Output increased from Rupees 1,908 thousand crore in 2011–12 to Rupees 2,949 thousand crore in 2023–24—an overall rise of 54.6%. The crop sector remains the dominant component, contributing 54.1% of the total GVO in 2023–24.
Key Contributions In Crop Production
Among crops, cereals and fruits & vegetables emerged as the largest segments, collectively accounting for 52.5% of the crop GVO. Within cereals, paddy and wheat hold the largest share, comprising nearly 85% of the cereal GVO during 2023–24.
State-Wise Share In Cereal GVO
Five major agricultural states Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Haryana collectively contributed about 53% to the cereal output value. While Uttar Pradesh continues to lead, its share dropped slightly from 18.6% to 17.2% over the review period.
Shifting Trends In Horticulture
For the first time in 2023–24, the GVO of bananas exceeded that of mangoes. In the vegetable category, potato remains the top contributor with its value steadily increasing across the years.
Livestock Sector Developments
The livestock sector has shown consistent growth, with its GVO increasing from Rupees 488 thousand crore in 2011–12 to Rupees 919 thousand crore in 2023–24. While milk remains the largest component, its share fell slightly from 67.2% to 65.9%. Meanwhile, the meat segment gained prominence, rising from 19.7% to 24.1%.
Growth In Forestry And Logging
The forestry and logging segment expanded from Rupees 149 thousand crore to Rupees 227 thousand crore during the 12-year period. Notably, the share of industrial wood rose significantly from 49.9% to 70.2%, indicating an industrial shift within the sector.
Rise Of Fishing And Aquaculture
Fishing and aquaculture are playing an increasingly important role in agricultural GVA. Their combined share rose from 4.2% in 2011–12 to 7.0% in 2023–24. Interestingly, within this domain, the share of marine fishing increased, while inland fishing declined, showing a change in sourcing trends.
