Patna Set To Transform Urban Transport With Water Metro Services

Description

The upcoming water metro service in Patna is set to bring a major shift in the city’s urban mobility system. Recently announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the project aims to make better use of the Ganga River as a means of inland water transport, offering a much-needed solution to the city’s persistent traffic congestion. With Patna’s growing population and limited road infrastructure, this eco-friendly initiative promises a practical and sustainable transport alternative.

Background And Inspiration

The concept of a water metro was first introduced in Kochi, where a fleet of electric and hybrid ferries operates on scheduled routes. Since its launch in 2023, Kochi’s water metro has connected island communities with the mainland, serving over 4 million passengers. Inspired by this success, the Patna model will aim to replicate the system, focusing primarily on routes along the east-west stretch of the Ganga, with future plans for cross-river connectivity.

Patna Needs Water Metro

Patna suffers from severe road congestion, with infrastructure unable to keep up with the rising number of vehicles. Expanding roadways is difficult due to the city’s geographical limitations. The Ganga River, largely untapped for mass transit, presents an opportunity for a clean and efficient transport alternative. The introduction of water-based commuting could significantly reduce pressure on Patna’s overburdened road networks.

Project Progress And Planning

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has engaged Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) to carry out a feasibility study for the project. Preliminary surveys have already been conducted at various ghats along the Ganga, assessing the river’s navigability and the expected commuter load. Based on the findings, route designs and cost estimates will be prepared, with the water metro expected to roll out in phases, starting from high-traffic areas.

Key Challenges

There are several hurdles to be addressed before the project can be fully realised. Seasonal changes and sediment build-up in the river pose challenges for maintaining navigable waterways. Existing ferry services in the region are informal and lack basic infrastructure. Additionally, smooth coordination between different regulatory bodies and transport authorities will be essential to ensure efficient and safe operations.

Expected Advantages

If successfully implemented, the water metro could become a game-changer for Patna. It promises to:

  • Reduce traffic congestion on the roads

  • Improve air quality through the use of electric ferries

  • Enhance urban connectivity via new terminals and jetties

  • Boost economic activity, creating jobs and attracting tourism

Seamless Connectivity With Other Transport Modes

The new water metro system is designed to integrate with Patna’s upcoming rail metro, creating a multi-modal transport network. Terminals will be strategically located near major transport hubs, enabling passengers to switch easily between different travel modes.

Supporting National Transport Goals

The Patna Water Metro supports national priorities for developing inland water transport. It will benefit from infrastructure built under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, which is focused on enhancing National Waterway-1. This broader initiative aims to unlock the full potential of India’s river systems as efficient transport corridors.
