In a significant step toward strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure, Bihar is set to become one of the first Indian states to establish a nuclear power facility. This development comes under the newly launched Nuclear Energy Mission and is seen as a major prelude to the upcoming state assembly elections.
India’s Nuclear Energy Mission
The Nuclear Energy Mission is a national initiative aimed at scaling up the deployment of nuclear energy across the country to meet growing electricity demands with cleaner alternatives. The Union Budget for 2025–26 has earmarked ?20,000 crore to support this program, which envisions setting up at least one nuclear power station in each Indian state to ensure nationwide energy security and sustainability.
Introduction Of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
The planned nuclear plant in Bihar will feature Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. Unlike traditional large-scale reactors, SMRs are compact, more adaptable, and offer enhanced safety features. Their modular nature allows easier integration into smaller power grids and makes them ideal for regions like Bihar, where infrastructure development is still progressing. This next-generation nuclear solution emphasizes both reliability and eco-friendly design.

Bihar has long grappled with electricity shortages and infrastructure gaps. Establishing a nuclear plant is expected to significantly boost power availability, aiding the state's push toward industrial development and economic growth. Battery Storage Project To Support Grid
Complementing the nuclear project, the Central Government has also greenlit a 1,000 MW battery energy storage system in Bihar. To support this initiative, the government will offer viability gap funding of Rupees 18 lakh per MW.
