India is significantly enhancing its strategic deterrence and naval strike capabilities with the development of the K-6 missile, a next-generation hypersonic submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). About K-6 Missile
The K-6 is an indigenously-developed, nuclear-capable SLBM currently being built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at its Advanced Naval Systems Laboratory in Hyderabad. It is part of India's classified K-series of ballistic missiles that are designed specifically for deployment from submarines to ensure survivability and retaliatory strike capability in the event of a nuclear confrontation.
Deployment Platform: S-5 Class SSBNs
The K-6 is being engineered to be deployed aboard the upcoming S-5 class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). These submarines are significantly more advanced than the currently deployed Arihant-class SSBNs. The S-5 submarines will be larger, measuring around 12 metres in length and 2 metres in diameter, and will have the capacity to carry multiple missiles or larger payloads, significantly extending India's maritime deterrence envelope.
Key Features Of K-6 SLBM
Hypersonic Speed - The K-6 is expected to attain speeds up to Mach 7.5 (approximately 9,260 km/h), making it incredibly fast and reducing the enemy’s reaction time to near zero. This speed also makes interception by current missile defense systems exceedingly difficult.
Extended Range - The K-6 is projected to have a range of 8,000 km, allowing India to strike targets far beyond its immediate neighborhood. This significantly exceeds the ranges of its predecessors: K-3: 1,000–2,000 km, K-4: 3,500 km, K-5: 5,000–6,000 km
MIRV Capability - The K-6 will be equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs), allowing it to carry multiple nuclear or conventional warheads, each capable of being aimed at different targets. This enhances its utility in both counterforce and countervalue strategies.
Dual Warhead Configuration - The missile is designed to carry either nuclear or conventional warheads, giving it strategic versatility in various conflict scenarios.
Strategic Significance Of K-6 Development
The K-6 missile marks a critical leap in India’s nuclear triad, particularly in second-strike capability.
