Description

In a landmark development for India’s agricultural innovation sector, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) is setting up its first international nano fertiliser manufacturing facility in Brazil. This strategic partnership with Brazilian firm NANOFERT is poised to transform crop nutrition practices in South America by introducing eco-friendly, efficient, and sustainable nano fertiliser technologies to the region.

The announcement underscores India’s growing influence in the global agri-input industry. This venture not only reflects IFFCO's commitment to sustainable agriculture but also represents a significant leap in the globalisation of India's agri-tech solutions. The facility in Brazil will cater primarily to staple South American crops such as corn, soybean, and sugarcane, meeting the region's need for productivity enhancement and environmentally responsible fertiliser options.

Key Features Of Brazil Plant

  • Location: Curitiba, Paraná Province, Brazil

  • Annual Capacity: 4.5 million litres of nano fertilisers

  • Ownership Structure: 70% IFFCO Nanoventions (India), 30% NANOFERT (Brazil)

  • Trial Production Timeline: Set to commence by the end of 2025

The manufacturing unit will focus initially on nano urea and nano DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate), which are touted as game-changers in sustainable farming due to their high nutrient efficiency and reduced environmental footprint.

Background: IFFCO’s Nano Revolution

IFFCO launched Nano Urea in India in 2021, marking a shift towards next-generation fertilisers that require significantly smaller quantities for the same, if not better, agricultural yield. Since its inception:

  • Over 500,000 bottles of nano fertilisers have been exported to more than 40 countries.

  • Nano Urea is priced at Rupees 240 per 500 ml, while Nano DAP is priced at Rupees 600 for the same volume.

  • Both products are designed to replace conventional fertilisers, reducing their usage and environmental impact.

Brazil

Brazil is among the world's leading agricultural economies and a top global producer of corn, soybean, and sugarcane. Field trials of IFFCO’s nano fertilisers in Brazilian conditions have yielded impressive results:

  • 10% increase in crop yield for corn and soybean

  • 7% increase in sugarcane productivity

  • Over 20% reduction in the use of traditional urea and DAP

By establishing a local manufacturing base, IFFCO aims to reduce logistical costs and ensure timely, cost-effective availability of nano fertilisers to South American farmers.

Strategic Significance

  • Enhances India-Brazil agricultural collaboration

  • Strengthens IFFCO’s position as a global leader in nano-based fertiliser technology

  • Promotes sustainable farming practices by reducing dependency on chemical fertilisers

  • Opens avenues for research, joint trials, and agri-tech development in Latin America

Looking forward, IFFCO is planning to expand its product line by introducing nano zinc and nano copper formulations. With a Rupees 4,200 crore investment already funnelled into research and development, the cooperative is betting big on nano technologies to shape the future of global agriculture.

Despite moderate adoption rates in the domestic market, the international appetite for nano fertilisers continues to grow indicating a bright future for Indian innovation on the global stage.
