Description

In a strategic effort to strengthen the post-harvest value chain for key spice crops, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has partnered with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research National Institute for Research on Commercial Agriculture (ICAR-NIRCA) to launch a specialized training initiative aimed at Farmers' Producer Organisations (FPOs) and individual spice cultivators. This program, based in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, focuses on advanced post-harvest management and value-addition techniques for turmeric and chilli, two economically significant crops for the region.

Announced on June 25, 2025, the training initiative was unveiled during a stakeholder interaction session at the NIRCA campus in Rajamahendravaram. Officials from both NABARD and NIRCA stressed the importance of reducing post-harvest losses through the adoption of scientific techniques. Improper handling and substandard storage conditions often lead to microbial contamination and moisture-related degradation, adversely impacting both market value and export potential.

Objectives Of Programme

The primary goals of the initiative include:

  • Training farmers in scientific post-harvest practices for improved shelf-life and quality.

  • Minimizing crop losses due to microbial contamination and excess moisture.

  • Enhancing the domestic and global marketability of Andhra Pradesh's turmeric and chilli produce.

  • Empowering FPOs with modern processing and packaging knowledge to support value-added agri-business.

Key Features Of Training

The program comprises several critical components designed to improve practical knowledge and adoption of modern tools:

  • Modular Training Sessions: Covering best practices for drying, grading, storage, and packaging of spices.

  • Capacity Building: Tailored for both individual farmers and FPO personnel to improve quality control and meet certification standards.

  • Technology Transfer: Introduction of dehydration machines, moisture control systems, and contamination-prevention methods.

  • Expert Guidance: Conducted under the leadership of Dr. M. Sheshu Madhav, Director of NIRCA, along with senior NABARD representatives.

Context And Background

Andhra Pradesh is among India's leading producers and exporters of turmeric and chilli, with the East Godavari district serving as a major cultivation zone. These spices, however, are highly perishable and moisture-sensitive, making post-harvest management crucial for ensuring quality and safety.

Farmers' Producer Organisations (FPOs) are instrumental in pooling the produce of smallholder farmers, improving market access, and supporting collective processing and branding. By training these grassroots organizations, the initiative seeks to create sustainable rural enterprises capable of delivering high-value agri-products to domestic and international markets.

Institutional Overview

  • NABARD: India’s premier rural development bank, facilitating credit access, infrastructure development, and agri-enterprise support.

  • ICAR-NIRCA: A specialized institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, focusing on commercial crop research and development.

Significance Of Training Programme

This collaborative initiative stands to benefit the spice value chain in multiple ways:

  • Minimizes post-harvest wastage, especially due to fungal or bacterial contamination.

  • Improves the income potential for farmers through better product quality and certification.

  • Promotes scientific and sustainable agricultural practices across the spice-producing regions.

  • Strengthens the role of FPOs in rural value chains, enhancing their market competitiveness and bargaining power.
