Description
In a significant addition to the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, researchers have identified a new species of gecko named Dravidogecko coonoor. The discovery was made in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu and was recently published in the scientific journal Bionomina. The research, led by A. Abinesh, revealed that this gecko was previously mistaken for Hemidactylus anamallensis, a different species.
Discovery And Research Background
The identification of Dravidogecko coonoor was the result of detailed field investigations conducted across various parts of the Western Ghats. During these studies, researchers also documented eight other species from the same genus, Dravidogecko, increasing the total known species in the genus to nine.
Habitat And Range
This newly identified gecko has so far been recorded only in Coonoor, a hill station in Tamil Nadu. It occupies both urban settings and natural landscapes such as building walls, tree trunks, and shrubbery. The region where it was found includes montane forests and monoculture plantations, which are often impacted by human activities. These specific habitat requirements make the species sensitive to environmental changes.
Conservation Concerns
Researchers have highlighted that Dravidogecko coonoor may be under threat due to its limited distribution and lack of presence within protected zones. Ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and land-use changes poses a significant risk. Additionally, the impact of climate change could further endanger the species, prompting an urgent need for conservation measures.
Importance Of Discovery
The documentation of Dravidogecko coonoor emphasizes the ecological importance of the Western Ghats, one of the world’s major biodiversity hotspots. The find underlines the critical role of continuous scientific exploration in identifying lesser-known species and understanding their ecological roles. Protecting such endemic species is vital for the overall health and resilience of these fragile ecosystems.
