Description

India has reached a significant milestone by securing a position among the top 100 countries in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Index. According to the Sustainable Development Report 2025, India now ranks 99th out of 193 nations, achieving a score of 67, which reflects its ongoing efforts and progress in advancing the global development agenda established in 2015.

About SDG Index

The Sustainable Development Goals Index evaluates countries based on their performance across 17 global goals, covering key areas such as poverty eradication, education, health, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. The index is compiled by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and led by economist Jeffrey Sachs. It serves as a comprehensive benchmark for tracking national progress toward the 2030 SDG targets.

India’s Global Standing And Regional Context

In the 2025 edition of the report:

  • India ranks 99th, improving its previous performance

  • China holds the 49th position, while the United States ranks 44th

  • Within South Asia, Bhutan ranks highest at 74th, ahead of Nepal and Bangladesh

At the top of the index are European nations, particularly the Nordic countries, with Finland maintaining the No. 1 spot, demonstrating strong outcomes across most SDGs.

Global Progress And Setbacks

Despite notable progress, the report highlights that only 17% of SDG targets are currently on track to be achieved by 2030. Various challenges, including armed conflicts, economic instability, and limited fiscal space, continue to slow development, especially in vulnerable regions.

Some nations like Nepal and Cambodia have shown measurable gains, demonstrating how focused investment in social and economic development can lead to better outcomes.

Areas Of Advancement and Concern

Since 2015, countries have seen considerable improvement in areas such as:

  • Electricity access

  • Mobile broadband penetration

  • Lower child mortality rates

However, the report also notes setbacks in other crucial areas like:

  • Rising obesity levels

  • Deteriorating press freedom

This reflects the uneven pace of sustainable development and the need for more balanced policies.

Need For Financial Reforms

The report calls for a restructuring of the global financial system, citing how capital inflows disproportionately benefit wealthy nations, leaving developing economies with inadequate resources to meet their SDG commitments. The upcoming International Conference on Financing for Development is expected to address these funding imbalances and push for more inclusive global financial mechanisms.

Multilateralism And Global Cooperation

Countries were also assessed for their support of UN-led multilateral efforts. Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago emerged as the strongest supporters, while the United States ranked last for the second year in a row due to its withdrawal from several major international agreements. This raises ongoing concerns about global unity in achieving sustainable development goals.
