Description
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has partnered with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Bhashini initiative to enhance linguistic inclusivity across Indian states. This collaboration is expected to dismantle language barriers and promote more equitable access to digital services.
About Bhashini Platform
BHASHINI stands for BHASHa INterface for India and is an advanced AI-driven language translation platform launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the National Language Translation Mission (NLTM).
The platform’s primary objective is to create a national public digital infrastructure for Indian languages, allowing the development of AI-powered tools and services that cater to a multilingual population. It facilitates translation between Indian languages, making digital content and government services more accessible to people in their native languages.
Bhashini aims to significantly boost the volume of Indian language content available online, especially in vital sectors such as governance, science, and technology. This is achieved by leveraging AI and natural language processing (NLP) tools to overcome linguistic challenges.
Key Features And Implementation
The platform is implemented by the Digital India BHASHINI Division, a part of the Digital India Corporation, which operates under MeitY as a not-for-profit Section 8 company.
It currently supports over 22 Indian languages, promoting digital inclusivity for diverse linguistic communities.
Bhashini offers several language-based services such as: Text-to-text translation, Speech recognition, Text-to-speech conversion, Optical character recognition (OCR), Video and document translation, Language detection, Voice-enabled payments
A mobile application has been launched for user convenience.
Startups can access Bhashini’s functionalities through API integration, enabling them to incorporate multilingual capabilities into their platforms, such as chatbots.
The platform includes a ‘Bhasadaan’ section, where citizens can contribute to ongoing crowdsourcing efforts in language development.
Integration With UPI For Language-Based Payments
Bhashini has collaborated with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to facilitate conversational UPI payments in Indian languages. This integration is a step forward in making digital financial transactions more accessible and user-friendly for people who prefer regional languages.
