In a move aimed at reducing toll congestion and offering greater ease of travel, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari introduced the FASTag Annual Pass Scheme in June 2025. This initiative is specially designed for non-commercial private vehicles, offering a more efficient and budget-friendly way to use national highways.
About FASTag
FASTag is an electronic toll collection technology operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Introduced in 2014 and made mandatory from 2021, it enables automatic toll deduction via a sticker attached to the vehicle’s windscreen, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping.
Key Features Of FASTag Annual Pass
The new Annual Pass offers a significant convenience boost to regular commuters:
Cost: Rupees 3,000
Validity: 12 months or up to 200 toll trips whichever comes first
Savings: Users may save up to Rupees 7,000 annually, with an estimated Rupees 15 cost per trip compared to normal toll charges
Coverage: Applies to National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas
Activate Annual Pass
To make use of this scheme, vehicle owners must:
Ensure their FASTag is properly affixed, linked to a valid registration number, and not blacklisted
Activate the pass by making a successful payment via the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the NHAI website
Trip Counting Works
The trip tracking system varies based on toll type:
At point-based tolls, one crossing counts as one trip, and a round trip counts as two
For closed tolling systems, one entry-exit sequence equals one trip
This clear mechanism allows users to easily monitor their remaining trips under the pass.
Important Terms And Restrictions
The scheme is only available for non-commercial vehicles (e.g., cars, jeeps, vans)
If used with commercial vehicles, the pass will be automatically deactivated
Only applicable at designated NH and NE toll plazas state highway tolls follow standard FASTag rules
Future Revisions And Updates
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the pricing for the Annual Pass may be revised each year, with any changes effective from April 1. This ensures the scheme remains adaptable and economically sustainable.
