Description

A groundbreaking discovery in the Makum Coalfield of Assam has unveiled fossilized leaves estimated to be 24 million years old, offering critical insights into the region’s ancient ecosystem. Conducted by scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, the research identified these fossils as belonging to the Nothopegia genus plants that are today found only in the Western Ghats, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unearthing Fossils In Assam Coalfields

The fossilized leaves were excavated from the Makum Coalfield, a location well-known for its rich paleobotanical resources. Using morphological comparisons with herbarium records, researchers confirmed the leaves' identity as Nothopegia, a genus absent in the present-day northeastern India but still existing in the tropical forests of the Western Ghats.

Dating Back To Oligocene Epoch

These fossil remains are traced to the late Oligocene period, approximately 23 to 24 million years ago, making them the oldest known evidence of the Nothopegia genus. This discovery deepens our understanding of ancient biodiversity patterns and ecosystem dynamics that shaped South Asia’s plant life.

Reconstructing Past Climate Conditions

Analysis using Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP) revealed that northeast India once had a warm and humid climate, favourable for tropical flora like Nothopegia. This type of climate allowed such species to thrive, until drastic shifts in the region's climate occurred over time.

Geological Events And Biodiversity Shifts

The uplift of the Himalayas played a transformative role in reshaping the region’s climate. The resulting changes in temperature, monsoon patterns, and wind circulation made the northeastern region unsuitable for tropical species, leading to the local extinction of Nothopegia and other flora.

Survival In Western Ghats

While it vanished from Assam, Nothopegia found refuge in the Western Ghats, where the climate remained relatively stable and favourable. This resilience highlights the significance of such regions as biodiversity refuges, where ancient species can survive despite environmental upheavals elsewhere.

Interdisciplinary Research Approach

The research integrated paleobotany, taxonomy, and climate modelling to interpret ecological changes over geological timescales. This comprehensive method enhances our understanding of how species have historically adapted—or failed to adapt—to climate and habitat transformations.

Lessons For Modern-Day Biodiversity

The fossil record of Nothopegia offers a historical perspective on extinction and species migration in response to climatic shifts. These findings are particularly relevant today, as climate change driven by human activity threatens modern biodiversity. Studying the past responses of plants helps predict how contemporary ecosystems might evolve or collapse.

The Case For Conservation

Preserving biodiversity hotspots like the Western Ghats is vital for maintaining Earth’s ecological memory. Such locations act as safe havens for ancient and rare species, making them essential in the global effort to combat biodiversity loss in the face of escalating environmental stress.
