Description

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inaugurated the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant in Haryana. Recognized as the country’s largest automotive freight terminal, this facility aims to streamline vehicle logistics and boost rail-based cargo movement.

The terminal is directly linked to the Patli railway station via a dedicated 10 km railway line, which is a segment of the broader 121.7 km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor. The project reflects a significant infrastructure investment, with an estimated Rupees 800 crore spent on its development.

Funding And Operational Capacity

The Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC) contributed Rupees 684 crore, while Maruti Suzuki provided the remaining funds. Designed to handle a capacity of up to 4.5 lakh vehicles annually, this terminal is poised to significantly improve the efficiency of automobile logistics in India.

Transformation Of Indian Railways

Since 2014, Indian Railways has undergone notable upgrades. The railway budget has risen substantially from Rupees 24,000 crore to Rupees 2.5 lakh crore annually. Station facilities have improved across the country, and more than 1,200 General Coaches were added in the past year, enhancing comfort for millions of passengers.

Upgrades To Passenger Train Services

To support the rising demand for suburban travel, MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains will see an expansion in coach numbers from the current 8-12 coaches to 16-20 coaches. A new factory in Kazipet, Andhra Pradesh, will produce over 100 MEMU trains. Additionally, the rollout of Namo Bharat trains represents a major step in meeting commuter needs.

Record-Breaking Freight And Passenger Movement

During FY 2023-24, Indian Railways transported approximately 720 crore passengers and handled 1,617 million tonnes of freight, making it the second-largest freight mover globally. These achievements underscore the growing efficiency and scale of operations within the national transporter.

Reforms In Ticket Booking System

Starting July 1, 2025, new rules for Tatkal ticket bookings will be introduced. Only passengers with Aadhaar authentication will be allowed to book tickets during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window, aiming to reduce misuse and ensure fair access. A pilot initiative in Bikaner is also testing the generation of reservation charts 24 hours before departure, enhancing the travel planning experience.

Expansion Of Amrit Bharat Train Services

Currently, three Amrit Bharat trains are operational and have received strong positive feedback from travelers. Plans are underway to launch six more trains soon, and production is ongoing for an additional 50 trains, with the goal of improving regional connectivity and rail travel quality.

Major Railway Developments In Haryana

Haryana has witnessed a significant increase in railway investment, with the budget rising from Rupees 300 crore to Rupees 3,416 crore over the past decade. A total of 823 km of new rail lines have been added, and the entire network in the state is now electrified. Projects worth Rupees 11,800 crore are currently in progress, including the revamp of 34 railway stations.

Modernisation Of Railway Coach Production

The Railway Coach Factory in Sonipat is being modernized to meet future demand. Once upgraded, the facility will play a key role in boosting India’s capacity to produce passenger coaches, supporting the continued transformation of Indian Railways.
