Description

On June 12, 2025, tragedy struck when Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, which was en route to London Gatwick Airport with 242 passengers and crew onboard, went down just 625 feet from the runway in a nearby residential neighborhood. A mayday distress call was issued by the pilot moments after takeoff. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

About Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Launched in 2007, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner represents a significant leap in long-haul aircraft design. With a composite structure made primarily from carbon fibre, it is notably lighter and more fuel-efficient consuming around 25% less fuel than traditional aircraft. The first commercial flight occurred in 2012, following several years of delays due to production and technical challenges. The Dreamliner is available in three versions: 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10.

787-8 Variant Specifications

The model involved in the crash, the 787-8, typically seats up to 248 passengers and has a maximum range of approximately 13,530 km. It measures 57 metres in length with a wingspan of 60 metres. This variant is equipped with either GEnx-1B or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Passengers often appreciate its large windows, higher cabin humidity, and improved pressurization, which are designed to enhance comfort on long-haul journeys.

Safety Track Record And Investigations

While the Boeing 787 has generally been seen as a modern and efficient aircraft, it has not been free from scrutiny. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched multiple probes into manufacturing and safety concerns, particularly surrounding structural assembly processes and component quality. In May 2024, the FAA began re-inspecting all Dreamliners currently under production amid growing concerns about build integrity.

Past Incidents Involving 787

The Dreamliner has previously been involved in several high-profile safety events. In March 2024, a Latam Airlines 787 experienced a sharp altitude drop caused by crew error. Back in 2013, all 787s worldwide were temporarily grounded due to battery fire risks linked to lithium-ion systems. While not directly related, Boeing also faced global backlash after the 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, which raised broader concerns about its safety protocols and regulatory oversight.

Broader Impact On Aviation Safety

The crash of AI171 has reignited debate over aviation safety standards, especially concerning technologically advanced aircraft. It has raised critical questions about the manufacturing oversight and operational checks in place. This incident may influence both public confidence in Boeing aircraft and the direction of future aviation policies, with potential calls for stricter inspections and enhanced transparency across the industry.
