Description

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is preparing to roll out CROPIC Collection of Real-Time Observations & Photo of Crops, a forward-looking initiative that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with crowd-sourced crop data. This innovative system aims to revolutionize how crop monitoring and loss assessments are conducted across the country, ultimately benefiting Indian farmers.

Know About CROPIC

CROPIC is designed to collect real-time images of crops during their growth cycle, enabling precise evaluations of crop health. Initially, the program will target Kharif 2025 and Rabi 2025-26 seasons. The collected data will help build a comprehensive digital directory of crop characteristics for various agricultural and insurance purposes.

Working Of System

The initiative will rely on a dedicated mobile application that allows farmers to upload photos of their fields. These images will then be assessed to identify the type of crop, its growth stage, and any signs of damage. This ground-level, crowd-sourced information offers a faster and more accurate alternative to traditional methods of data collection.

Use Of AI For Analysis

An AI-driven cloud platform will process the submitted photos to extract key insights about crop conditions. These insights will be displayed via a web-based dashboard accessible to both farmers and government authorities. This approach not only speeds up analysis but also ensures greater transparency in crop monitoring.

Key Objectives And Advantages

One of the main goals of CROPIC is to improve the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) by automating the identification of crop damage and expediting compensation payouts. With the help of computer vision technologies, the system is expected to enhance accuracy and build financial security for farmers.

Pilot Phase And Expansion Plans

The initial rollout will begin with pilot programs in 50 districts, chosen to represent different agro-climatic regions. These areas will focus on three major crops per season. Based on the results, a nationwide expansion is planned by 2026, covering all crops insured under the PMFBY scheme.

Funding And Financial Support

The project will be supported by the Fund for Innovation and Technology (FIAT), which has earmarked Rs 825 crore to foster technological advancements in crop insurance. This funding will ensure the successful development and scaling of the CROPIC initiative.
