Description

India is preparing to launch its inaugural underwater museum and artificial coral reef near Nivati Rocks, situated off Vengurla in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The project, backed by the Union Ministry of Tourism with a financial allocation of Rupees 46.91 crore, aims to promote marine biodiversity, eco-tourism, and underwater activities such as scuba diving and potential submarine tours.

On June 11, 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis virtually inaugurated the groundbreaking underwater museum initiative. This project is a milestone in sustainable tourism and marine conservation. The Indian Navy’s decommissioned vessel INS Guldar, retired in January 2024, will be transformed into the central feature of this submerged attraction. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has taken charge of its repurposing.

Key Goals Of Project

  • Transform INS Guldar into an underwater museum to attract marine tourism.

  • Develop an artificial reef to support and restore marine biodiversity.

  • Introduce new tourism avenues, including scuba diving and future submarine tours.

  • Preserve naval heritage through innovative reuse of a historic warship.

About INS Guldar

  • INS Guldar was a 1,120-ton Landing Ship Tank (LST) used by the Indian Navy.

  • It was officially decommissioned in January 2024.

  • The ship has undergone eco-friendly cleaning processes to ensure its submersion poses no threat to the marine environment.

Project Location And Environmental Significance

  • The site chosen is Nivati Rocks in Sindhudurg, known for its clear waters and rich aquatic life.

  • The ship will be deliberately sunk to form a base for artificial coral reef development.

  • These reefs are known to revitalize marine habitats and benefit local fisheries.

Funding And Execution

  • The initiative is funded by the Union Ministry of Tourism with Rupees 46.91 crore allocated.

  • MTDC is responsible for executing and managing the project.

  • It supports broader national strategies such as the Blue Economy and sustainable coastal tourism.

Expected Impact And Benefits

  • Boosts local tourism and employment along the Konkan coast.

  • Positions India as a leading destination for eco-tourism and maritime history.

  • Offers educational and recreational opportunities for tourists, students, and marine researchers.

  • Promotes public understanding of marine conservation and sustainability.
