India is currently witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases with the detection of a new variant, XFG. As of June 2025, health authorities have confirmed 163 infections linked to this strain, with Maharashtra reporting the majority. The nationwide active case count has reached 6,815, including three fatalities recorded within the past 24 hours. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium has officially verified the variant's presence.
About XFG Variant
The XFG variant is a recombinant form of the virus, created through a combination of two previous strains LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. It is marked by four specific mutations in its spike protein and is a descendent of the Omicron lineage. Since its first identification in Canada, the XFG strain has demonstrated a rapid transmission rate on a global scale.
Regional Case Distribution
Maharashtra tops the list with 89 cases. Other affected states include Tamil Nadu (16), Kerala (15), Gujarat (11), and Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal, each reporting six cases. Telangana has also recorded a fresh infection.
Clinical Presentation And Impact
So far, XFG appears to result in mild respiratory symptoms, particularly in those who are vaccinated or have had previous COVID-19 infections. Nationally, around 66% of current respiratory viral infections are attributed to COVID-19. Despite the increase in cases, hospitalisation remains minimal even among high-risk groups.
How XFG Compares With JN.1 Variant
Unlike JN.1, a BA.2.86 sub-lineage of Omicron classified as a ‘variant of interest’ by the WHO, the XFG variant has not yet been given such a designation. JN.1, with approximately 30 mutations, has been spreading rapidly across Asia, while XFG's classification and behaviour are still under study.
Government Action And Public Health Measures
To assess readiness, the Union Health Ministry is conducting mock drills across various health facilities. States have been advised to stock up on oxygen supplies, ensure adequate isolation infrastructure, and maintain emergency drug availability. Most infections are currently being managed through home isolation. Additionally, surveillance systems are actively tracking influenza-like and severe respiratory illnesses.
COVID-19 Situation Update
Since January 2025, the country has recorded 65 COVID-related deaths. In contrast, the end of May saw just 257 active cases. Authorities continue to closely monitor trends through genome sequencing and field-level surveillance to contain the spread of the new variant.
