India has announced a significant investment of Rupees 5,400 crore to support the development of 30 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This move strengthens the country’s commitment to renewable energy and follows an earlier Rupees 3,700 crore allocation for 13.2 GWh of storage capacity. The total financial outlay for energy storage is expected to reach Rupees 33,000 crore, aimed at ensuring a continuous renewable power supply and enhancing the reliability of the national grid.

The government will channel the Rupees 5,400 crore through the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) mechanism. VGF is used to make infrastructure projects financially feasible by covering part of the capital cost. Importance Of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

BESS plays a critical role in balancing power generated from intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar. It helps store excess energy during low demand and dispatch it during peak usage. This ability is vital for grid management and ensuring a stable energy supply.

Role Of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs)

Pumped Storage Projects operate by transferring water between two reservoirs located at different elevations. Water is pumped to the upper reservoir during off-peak hours and released to generate electricity when demand surges. This process effectively functions as a large-scale natural battery.

Waiver On Transmission Charges

To encourage investment in storage infrastructure, the government has extended the waiver on inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges for BESS and PSPs until June 30, 2028. This financial relief is expected to lower project costs and attract more developers.

Investment In UHVAC Transmission

A budget of Rupees 53,000 crore has been earmarked for upgrading Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHVAC) infrastructure. The plan includes the development of nine major transmission corridors by 2034, enabling better integration of renewable energy into the national grid.

Changes In Compensation For Landowners

The government has revised the compensation norms under the Right of Way (RoW) guidelines. Landowners will now receive enhanced compensation for land used in building power transmission towers. This update aims to speed up infrastructure deployment while ensuring fairness for affected communities.

Future Demand For Energy Storage

According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India will need 37 GWh of BESS by 2027 and up to 236 GWh by 2031-32. The current initiative is a crucial step toward meeting this demand. The country has set a target of reaching 43.2 GWh of BESS capacity by FY 2027-28.
