Description

In a major step towards promoting sustainable urban infrastructure and environmentally responsible waste management, the Delhi government has announced the development of India’s first electronic waste (e-waste) eco park. To be established in Holambi Kalan, North Delhi, the facility is designed to become a model for circular economy initiatives across the country.

Pioneering Project Announced By Delhi Government

The announcement was made by Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa after a high-level meeting with officials from the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). As part of the project’s implementation strategy, a global tender will soon be floated to invite advanced technology partners from around the world.

Project Details: Scope, Model, And Vision

Location & Development Model

Spread over 11.4 acres, the eco park is one of four such proposed facilities in India. It will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model through a public-private partnership (PPP) framework.

Waste Processing Capacity

The park will be capable of processing up to 51,000 tonnes of e-waste annually. This includes all 106 categories of waste materials as defined under the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022 ranging from household electronics to industrial machinery.

Revenue Potential

The initiative is expected to contribute over Rupees 350 crore to Delhi’s economy, promoting green industrial growth and setting a financial benchmark for similar future projects in other Indian cities.

Driving Circular Economy Principles

According to Minister Sirsa, the eco park is designed not just for waste recycling but to transition Delhi towards a circular economy where materials are reused, resources are optimized, and environmental impact is minimized. The project focuses on turning discarded electronic items into reusable raw materials, thereby reducing reliance on virgin resources and limiting landfill accumulation.

Infrastructure And Development Timeline

The eco park is scheduled for completion within 18 months and will include:

  • Dismantling and refurbishing units

  • Plastic recovery systems

  • A market for second-hand electronics

  • Skilling centers for e-waste workers

  • Facilities for the rehabilitation of informal sector workers

These components will create a comprehensive industrial ecosystem focused on sustainable waste management and worker welfare.

Empowering Informal Sector Workers

One of the park’s key goals is to formalize the employment of thousands of informal workers currently engaged in unsafe e-waste processing activities. The project aims to generate over 1,000 new “green jobs” and offer training and certification programs. Workers will also gain access to safer working conditions and government welfare schemes.

A National Milestone In Sustainable Waste Management

The upcoming facility in Holambi Kalan is positioned to serve as a national benchmark for smart waste management, green job creation, and eco-conscious urban development. Given India’s position as one of the world’s largest e-waste generators, this project marks a critical step in addressing the growing concerns around toxic waste and environmental harm.

This initiative aligns with India’s global climate commitments and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing the country’s commitment to green innovation, responsible consumption, and sustainable growth.
