Description
In a major zoological breakthrough, scientists have discovered a new species of freshwater flatworm in Pune’s Pashan Lake. Named Dugesia punensis, this is the first new planarian species documented in India since 1983. The discovery has been detailed in the latest issue of the Records of the Zoological Survey of India.
Key Features Of Dugesia punensis
This newly identified planarian is a freshwater worm, notable for its strong regenerative traits. The flatworm is approximately 8mm to 12mm in length. Its upper (dorsal) surface is dark brown with speckled markings, while the underside (ventral) is light-colored.
Distinctive characteristics include:
Slightly diminished auricles (ear-like projections)
A stretched pharynx
A single reproductive opening (gonopore)
Circular, reddish eggs
Two prominent black eyes surrounded by auricular grooves
Exceptional Regeneration Ability
One of the most remarkable biological features of Dugesia punensis is its ability to regenerate. Even after going without food for 15 to 20 days, the species can fully regenerate in just 10 to 13 days. This unique trait makes it a valuable subject for research in developmental and regenerative biology.
Ecological Role And Habitat
The species was found in Pashan Lake, located within the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot. The discovery highlights the ecological richness of the lake, which supports various endemic species.
