The recent setback of Japan's Hakuto-R mission has once again underscored the complexities private space firms face in executing successful Moon landings. Operated by ispace, the mission aimed to deliver the Resilience lander to the lunar surface. However, contact with the lander was lost during its descent, resulting in a crash. This marks ispace’s second unsuccessful attempt following a similar incident in 2023.
Overview Of Hakuto-R Mission
The Hakuto-R mission served as a technological demonstration to showcase the potential of private players in lunar ventures. Launched in January 2025 aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, the lander traveled on a low-energy trajectory, allowing time for system verifications en route to the Moon. Its intended touchdown site was Mare Frigoris selected for its relatively flat surface conditions.
Loss Of Communication And Crash Sequence
During the descent from a 100 km lunar orbit, the lander activated its main engine to begin slowing down. Shortly after this maneuver, ground control lost contact with the spacecraft. A delay in data from the laser rangefinder used to gauge altitude caused the lander to miscalculate its descent, preventing proper deceleration and ultimately resulting in a crash landing.
Ongoing Struggles In Private Moon Missions
Hakuto-R is not the only mission to face such challenges. Over the past two years, numerous private lunar missions have encountered difficulties, with only one successfully achieving a soft landing. The terminal phase of descent remains one of the most complex hurdles, as evidenced by the failure of missions like India’s Chandrayaan-2 and Russia’s Luna-25.
NASA’s Support Through CLPS Initiative
NASA has been encouraging commercial lunar efforts under its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. This program supports private companies in developing and deploying lunar technologies. Participants include Astrobotic Technologies and Firefly Aerospace, reflecting the growing involvement of the private sector in Moon exploration.
