Description

In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana in Hamirpur. The initiative is designed to expand the state’s green cover through the active involvement of local communities, especially focusing on afforestation in barren and degraded forest areas using fruit-bearing trees. Beyond ecological restoration, the scheme also aims to offer livelihood opportunities to rural residents, with special emphasis on empowering women and youth.

Key Objectives Of Yojana

The core aim of the scheme is to restore ecological stability by increasing the forested area across the state. Planting fruit-bearing trees serves a dual purpose boosting biodiversity and providing economic support to participating communities. The program emphasizes local involvement to ensure sustainability and foster a sense of responsibility toward forest resources among citizens.

Involvement Of Community Groups

Community participation is at the heart of the scheme’s implementation. The government has collaborated with mahila mandals (women’s groups) and self-help groups (SHGs) to execute plantation drives. These groups will also be responsible for nurturing and maintaining the planted areas over a five-year period, ensuring that the trees thrive and the objectives of the scheme are met. This inclusive approach helps strengthen community bonds and promotes a culture of environmental stewardship.

Participation Of Corporates And NGOs

To further scale up afforestation efforts, the scheme welcomes the involvement of private enterprises and non-governmental organizations. Corporations such as Ambuja, Adani Foundation, and UltraTech have pledged to take part by adopting sections of degraded forest land for tree plantation. This public-private collaboration underscores a shared responsibility in protecting natural resources.

Role Of Van Mitras

To bridge workforce gaps within the state’s forest department, the government has introduced the role of Van Mitras forest assistants who will support both conservation activities and community awareness programs. Many of these Van Mitras are young women, reflecting the inclusive and employment-oriented nature of the scheme. Their duties also include educating villagers about the value of forests and actively leading plantation initiatives.

Green State Vision And Complementary Efforts

The state government envisions making Himachal Pradesh a model ‘Green State’ by boosting forest conservation and adopting sustainable development practices. The Van Mitra Yojana plays a pivotal role in realizing this vision by promoting eco-consciousness and creating local employment.

In addition to this, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of three wellness centres in Hamirpur and launched a mobile application to digitally track the attendance of Van Mitras. These steps align with the government’s broader agenda of combining environmental action with social development.
